Healthy Mind

“Choose power-enhancing thoughts NOT power-draining thoughts. We have to think about what we think about. Learning to think great thoughts on purpose is the key to a great life.” ~Melanie Crowel

“As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives.” ~Henry David Thoreau

Positive thoughts expand our brains. Negative thoughts shrink them. The brain has neuroplasticity—it can change and be molded like plastic. The biggest factors creating these changes are our thoughts and emotions. “Self-directed neuroplasticity” means consciously influencing our minds in positive ways, such as meditation, that expand our brains and enable us to receive what we need to lead a fulfilling and happy life. Researchers continue to explore the effects of positive thinking and optimism on health. Health benefits that positive thinking may provide include:

  • Increased life span
  • Lower rates of depression
  • Lower levels of distress
  • Greater resistance to the common cold
  • Better psychological and physical well-being
  • Reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease
  • Better coping skills during hardships and times of stress
