Balancing the Root Chakra

balancing the root chakra

There are many ways to energize and bring balance to the root chakra. Here are some suggestions:

Try grounding yourself to the earth by placing your feet firmly on the ground (outdoors if possible) and feel your connection to the earth. Go for a walk. Pay attention to each step, feel the connection and support of the earth beneath your feet.

Direct prana (life force energy) downward into the feet: jump, stomp, march, do squats, run, dance…all these things. Sit on the ground to meditate.

Sound Therapy: Vibrational Note: C, Frequency: 256 Hz. Try meditating with singing bowls or music made with these frequencies and notes. Try repeating the Mantra: Lam. Listen to the elemental sounds of thunder, native music and drumming.

Connect with base roots and the earth by drumming, gardening, working with clay, walking in nature, being aware of the roots of trees and plants below the earth. Take some time to appreciate your body for the ways that it supports you.

Foods: Earthy, rooted foods like carrots, beets, and garlic are thought to energize the Root Chakra.

Home base: Home is where we are able to rest and feel comfortable. Cooking and cleaning in the home can be grounding as well as decorating and making the home atmosphere warm pleasing.

Incorporate the color red. The color red brings energy and balance to the Root Chakra. You may want to try wearing red clothing, painting your toenails red, eating red foods, etc. You can also meditate on bringing red energy down into the area of the Root Chakra.

Do Yoga...

The Root Chakra responds well to movement. All yoga postures are beneficial, particularly standing poses. Practicing barefoot outdoors adds connection to nature and the earth (but is not required). When standing, imagine your feet (or which ever body part touches the ground) rooted deeply within the earth, providing stability. Use the power of gravity to ground and connect with earth energy. Below are poses that are known to bring balance to the Root Chakra. If you are unfamiliar with the poses please review the directions from our list of posture pages or consult a yoga teacher.

  • Mountain Pose (Tadasana)
  • Warrior I (Virabhadrasana I)
  • Warrior II (Virabhadrasana II)
  • Triangle Pose (Trikonasana)
  • Standing Forward Fold (Uttanasana )
  • Bow Pose (Dhanurasana)
  • Bridge Pose (Setubandhasana)
  • Yogic Squat (Garland Pose)
  • Seated Forward Bend (Paschimottanasana)
  • Corpse Pose (Savasana)
  • supported butterfly pose (supta baddha konasana)

Give attention to the feet...

Get a foot massage, a pedicure, try foot reflexology. Use essential oils and massage your own feet. Try blending about 4 drops of essential oil with some Jojoba oil or coconut oil and use it to massage the feet. (Essential oils for Root Chakra balancing below.) Watch this short video to learn some simple reflexology foot massage techniques.

Here is another video on using tennis balls for a great foot massage.

Essential oils...

The Root Chakra is associated with our sense of smell. Engage your sense of smell with aromatherapy. The following are oils that have earthy or woody scents that are thought to help connect to the earth and bring balance to the root chakra: patchouli, vetiver, benzoin, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, myrrh, angelica root, frankincense, oakmoss, cardamom, and laurel. Trees that have deep roots in the Earth would also be beneficial for balancing, such as sandalwood, cedarwood, cypress, or rosewood. These grounding oils would be beneficial to diffuse or apply to bottoms of feet or sacrum. Valor (from Young Living) is also an excellent choice since the keywords for this healing mixture are courage, security, safety, grounding, and boundaries.

Crystals...

Crystals are thought to have healing energies. Try keeping a stone with you, where you can see it or use them for meditation. The following are thought to aid the Root Chakra: Hematite (ground, stabilize). Red Jasper (activate, energize),  Rhodochrosite (clearing), Black Tourmaline (protect, heal), Garnet (balance), Red Carnelian (balance), Smokey Quartz (protect, heal), Bloodstone (heal, purify), Red Jasper (ground, protect), Hematite (heal, protect against negativity), Onyx (clarity), Red carnelian (energize).

Try Mudra hand positions for meditation)...

The pran and prithvi mudras are thought to energize the Root Chakra.

Pran Mudra

Pran Mudra

Pran or prana means ‘life energy’. This mudra is said to energize elemental force of Root Chakra. It brings vitality and energy, reduces fatigue, reduces nervousness and improves vision. Combine with conscious,
slow, gentle breathing for a calming, stabilizing effect. The thumb touches both the ring and pinky at the tips. The index and middle fingers remain extended. This gesture is done with both hands.

Prithvi Mudra

Prithvi Mudra

Prithvi is the Sanskrit word for earth. This hand gesture recharges the Root Chakra aligning it with earth energies. Touch the tip off the ring finger of each hand to the tip of the thumb. The rest of the fingers should be pointing straight. The grounding energy from this gesture helps to balance the different elements inside of the body. It also also helps to stabilize and strengthen the body, alleviating fatigue. Practicing this mudra helps foster self-confidence and helps open the mind freeing it from irrational prejudices and beliefs. More about Mudras here.

Visualizing Meditation...

Find a comfortable position, either sitting or laying down. Keep the spine straight, close your eyes and focus on the breath. Inhale, allow the breath to travel down the base of your spine. Envision breathing in warm, red, healing energy down to the base of the spine. Continue breathing and envisioning for 2-5 minutes. You also may want to hold your hands over the root chakra while meditating.

Below is a guided imagery meditation. And below that is a vibrational meditation. Give them a try!

Try Daily Affirmations for Grounding:
I am here and I matter. I belong here.
I trust in myself and others.
I love and trust in my body’s ability to heal and support me.
I am strong, safe, grounded, and abundant.
I am connected to my body.
I am supported and connected to the earth.
I am safe, secure and grounded.

Try a Reiki or Energy Healing: You would be surprised how calming and balancing it can be. During a balancing session, a practitioner can assess and help get your energy cleared and flowing.
